If you have ever walked 3,000 blocks to your friend's base, built a portal, and emerged inside a cave 200 blocks from where you expected, you have run into Minecraft's portal linking system. The math behind it is simple — 8 to 1 — but the search rules that decide which portal you actually come out of trip up even experienced players. The 8 to 1 rule explained
Traveling through the Nether multiplies your distance by eight. The game implements this by dividing your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 when you enter a portal (or multiplying by 8 when you exit to the Overworld). Your Y coordinate is never changed — the game only searches horizontally.
- Overworld portal at X 800, Z -400 -> matching Nether coordinates are X 100, Z -50
- Nether portal at X 24, Z 96 -> matching Overworld coordinates are X 192, Z 768
- One Nether block equals eight Overworld blocks, so a 1,000-block Nether tunnel covers 8,000 Overworld blocks
How the portal search actually works
When you step into a portal, the game converts your coordinates, then searches for an existing portal near that converted point. Only if it finds nothing does it create a new portal. The search ranges are:
- Entering the Nether: searches within a 16-block radius of the converted coordinates
- Entering the Overworld: searches within a 128-block radius of the converted coordinates
- Search is horizontal only — a portal at the correct X and Z is found regardless of Y, and the highest valid portal wins in ambiguous cases
This search rule is the source of every broken portal link. If the game creates a new portal because yours was outside the search radius, it picks a random nearby valid location — often the wrong cave, the wrong height, or inside a lava pocket. Once that stray portal exists, it keeps stealing your teleports.
Linking two portals perfectly, step by step
- Stand at your Overworld portal and press F3 (or enable coordinates in Bedrock settings) to read the exact X and Z.
- Divide both numbers by 8. These are your target Nether coordinates.
- Travel to the Nether through any portal and walk to the target coordinates.
- Build and light a portal within 3 to 4 blocks of the target point. Closer is always safer.
- Break and relight the Overworld portal, then walk through it. Both portals now permanently link.
The same process works in reverse for Overworld-side linking: convert your Nether portal coordinates with the calculator, multiply mentally by 8, and place the Overworld portal at those coordinates.
Building a Nether hub that actually works
A Nether hub turns scattered bases into a fast travel network. Because of the 8 to 1 rule, a hub with tunnels of just a few hundred blocks connects locations thousands of blocks apart in the Overworld. A few rules keep a hub reliable:
- Dig tunnels between Y 60 and Y 70 — below the Nether's lava oceans (which sit around Y 31) and safely under the bedrock ceiling that starts around Y 122
- Space destination portals at least 16 Nether blocks apart so they never fall inside each other's search radius
- Light and label every tunnel branch; ghasts spawn in any 5x4x5 open space, so keep tunnels enclosed

Common portal problems and fixes
I keep coming out of the wrong portal
A stray portal inside the 128-block Overworld search radius is closer to your converted coordinates than your intended portal. Break every portal in the area except the one you want, then re-enter to force a fresh link.
The game built my Nether portal inside a mountain
When no valid open space exists at the converted coordinates, the game spawns the portal in the nearest valid spot and that offset portal becomes permanent. Tunnel to your exact target coordinates and build the destination portal manually — manual placement always beats the auto-generator.
My portal links work on one side but not the other
The search radii differ: 16 blocks on the Nether side versus 128 on the Overworld side. A link can be valid going one direction and broken going the other. Run the coordinates for both portals through the calculator and make sure each falls within the other's search radius.
The math in one table
For quick reference while building:
- Overworld -> Nether: divide X and Z by 8 (round to nearest whole block)
- Nether -> Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8
- Nether search radius: 16 blocks; Overworld search radius: 128 blocks
- Minimum safe distance between two Nether hub exits: 16 blocks (128 Overworld blocks)
- Y is never converted — match heights manually for clean hub floors
Every portal problem in Minecraft comes down to two numbers: divide by 8 going in, multiply by 8 coming out, and stay inside the search radius. Master that and the Nether becomes your highway system.
