Woodland Mansions are the rarest standard overworld structure in Minecraft. They hide inside Dark Forest biomes, often very far from spawn, and they hold evokers, vindicators, allays, and the only renewable source of the Totem of Undying. This 2026 guide shows every reliable way to find one in Java and Bedrock Edition, then how to raid it safely.
What a Woodland Mansion is
A Woodland Mansion is a huge two or three floor building made of dark oak planks, cobblestone, and birch. It is generated from many room pieces, so no two mansions look exactly alike. Inside you will find illagers, secret rooms, chests with loot, and jail cells that can hold allays.
- Biome: Dark Forest only (roofed forest on Bedrock).
- Distance: usually many thousands of blocks from spawn.
- Mobs: vindicators and evokers, plus captive allays in some versions.
- Key loot: Totem of Undying from evokers, enchanted books, diamond gear, and music discs in chests.
Method 1: Buy a Woodland Explorer Map
This is the best survival method because it uses no cheats. Cartographer villagers can sell a Woodland Explorer Map once they reach Journeyman level. The map marks the nearest mansion with a small house icon.
- Place a cartography table next to an unemployed villager to make a Cartographer.
- Trade paper, glass panes, and compasses to level it from Novice to Apprentice to Journeyman.
- Look for the Woodland Explorer Map trade. It costs emeralds plus a compass.
- Hold the map and travel toward the house icon. Your pointer shows your position and facing.
- If the map is blank around you, you are off its edge. Keep walking in the icon direction until it fills in.
Method 2: Use the /locate command
In worlds with cheats enabled, the game can tell you the exact coordinates of the nearest mansion.
- Java Edition: /locate structure minecraft:mansion
- Bedrock Edition: /locate structure mansion
- Then teleport with /tp @s X ~ Z, or walk using the F3 screen (Java) or Show Coordinates (Bedrock).
The command can take a few seconds because mansions are far apart. If it says no structure was found nearby, fly or teleport a few thousand blocks and try again.
Method 3: Use your seed with a finder tool
If you know your world seed, a seed map can show mansion locations before you ever leave spawn. Get the seed with /seed on Java or from the World Settings screen on Bedrock. Then open the MineBuildr Woodland Mansion Finder or Structure Finder to plan a route. Always confirm coordinates in game with the explorer map or /locate, because Java and Bedrock generate differently on the same seed number.
Method 4: Explore Dark Forests by hand
Without a map or cheats, search the right biome. Dark Forests have thick, flat canopies of dark oak, plus giant mushrooms. Fly above the canopy with an elytra or travel at night with the high ground in view so you can spot the mansion's tall cobblestone walls and lit windows. Use the Biome Finder to find Dark Forests first.
Travel faster through the Nether
Every block in the Nether equals 8 in the overworld. A mansion 16,000 blocks away is only 2,000 Nether blocks. Divide the mansion's X and Z by 8, build a tunnel or ice road there, and light a new portal. Our Nether Portal Calculator does the math, and the Nether portal coordinate guide explains linking step by step.
What to bring
- Iron or diamond armor, ideally with Protection.
- A shield to block vindicator axes and evoker fangs.
- A sword or axe, plus a bow for vexes.
- Plenty of food, torches, and blocks to wall off corridors.
- A bed to set spawn nearby, and a few Potions of Healing.
- Optional: an iron golem or a trident to keep illagers busy.
Plan the best gear with the Enchanting Calculator and Brewing Calculator.
How to raid the mansion safely
- Light the area around the entrance and place your bed outside.
- Clear one floor at a time, closing doors and torching every room.
- Fight evokers first. Their fangs and vexes do the most damage, so close distance quickly.
- Block vindicators with your shield, then counterattack.
- Mark cleared rooms with torches or banners so you do not get lost.
Loot and secret rooms
Each evoker drops a Totem of Undying, which saves you from death once when held. Chests can contain enchanted books, diamond hoes and chestplates, music discs, and lead. Look out for hidden rooms such as the fake End portal room, the obsidian room, and rooms behind walls. Check the walls of the top floor and listen for unusual layouts.
Make it your base
Many players keep a cleared mansion as a base. Plan the renovation with the Interior Designer or the House Planner, and save the layouts to your Workshop.
Quick checklist
- Level a cartographer to Journeyman and buy the Woodland Explorer Map.
- Or use /locate structure with cheats on.
- Travel through the Nether to save time.
- Bring armor, a shield, food, and a bed.
- Kill evokers for Totems of Undying.
