Best Minecraft Enchantments for Armor, Sword, Bow and Pickaxe (2026)

Key takeaways

  • Mending + Unbreaking III belongs on every piece of gear you intend to keep — it makes the item effectively permanent.
  • Best armor set: Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending on every piece, with Feather Falling IV on boots and Aqua Affinity + Respiration III on the helmet.
  • Best sword: Sharpness V + Looting III + Unbreaking III + Mending + Sweeping Edge III (Java) or Fire Aspect II.
  • Best bow: Power V + Infinity + Unbreaking III + Flame. Mending and Infinity conflict — pick one (Infinity for early game, Mending for endgame).
  • Best pickaxe: Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending + Fortune III (general) or Silk Touch (block collection) — Fortune and Silk Touch conflict.

There are 40+ enchantments in Minecraft, but only about a dozen actually matter. This guide is the loadout cheat sheet — the exact enchantments to put on each piece of gear, in priority order, with the conflicts that force you to choose. Once you know the targets, the bookshelves-for-max-enchantment setup gives you the rolls, and a Librarian villager fills in the rest.

The two enchantments that go on everything

Before any gear-specific picks: every tool, weapon and armor piece you plan to keep should have Unbreaking III and Mending. Unbreaking III triples the effective durability. Mending repairs the item with XP orbs you collect — meaning the item lasts forever as long as you keep mining or grinding mobs. These two together turn a piece of diamond gear into a permanent fixture. Mending only comes from enchanted books (Librarian villagers, fishing, or end-city loot) — the enchanting table will never give it directly.

Best armor enchantments

Helmet

  1. Protection IV — flat 16% damage reduction.
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending — permanent durability.
  3. Aqua Affinity — full mining speed underwater.
  4. Respiration III — +15 seconds of breath underwater.

Chestplate

  1. Protection IV
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending
  3. (Optional) Thorns III if you're a melee tank — most players skip it because it eats durability fast.

Leggings

  1. Protection IV
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending
  3. Swift Sneak III (only obtainable in Ancient Cities) — faster sneak speed, huge in PvP.

Boots

  1. Protection IV
  2. Feather Falling IV — flat 48% fall damage reduction, stacks with Protection.
  3. Unbreaking III + Mending
  4. Depth Strider III or Soul Speed III — pick based on biome (water vs Nether).

Best sword enchantments

  1. Sharpness V — +3 melee damage per hit.
  2. Looting III — +3 max mob drops, much higher rare-drop rates.
  3. Unbreaking III + Mending
  4. Sweeping Edge III (Java only) — full damage on sweep attacks.
  5. Fire Aspect II — burns mobs for 8 seconds, cooks meat drops on kill.

Smite (vs undead) and Bane of Arthropods are mutually exclusive with Sharpness. They're stronger against their specific mob group, but Sharpness V is better in 95% of fights. Keep a backup Smite V sword if you raid bastions or do Wither fights.

Best bow enchantments

  1. Power V — up to +11 damage per arrow.
  2. Infinity — never consumes arrows (except tipped arrows).
  3. Punch II — knockback on hit, huge for ranged kiting.
  4. Flame — sets target on fire, cooks meat drops on kill.
  5. Unbreaking III

Best crossbow enchantments

  1. Quick Charge III — minimum draw time.
  2. Multishot OR Piercing IV (mutually exclusive). Multishot fires 3 arrows in a spread; Piercing IV passes through 4 mobs in a line.
  3. Unbreaking III + Mending

Best pickaxe enchantments

  1. Efficiency V — fastest mining speed in the game.
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending
  3. Fortune III — up to 4x drops for diamonds, emeralds, lapis, redstone, coal — OR —
  4. Silk Touch — collects the block itself (glass, ice, ore blocks, spawners conditionally).

Fortune and Silk Touch conflict. Most players keep two pickaxes: one Fortune III for ore mining, one Silk Touch for block collection.

Best axe enchantments

Axes are dual-purpose — woodcutting and combat. The cleanest loadout is Sharpness V + Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending. Add Silk Touch if you collect mushroom blocks or chests with Silk Touch — but you'll almost always be better off keeping that on a dedicated pickaxe.

Best shovel and hoe enchantments

Shovel: Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending + (Fortune III for flint farming or Silk Touch for grass paths and gravel). Hoe: Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending + Fortune III — modern hoes break leaves, hay bales and sculk faster than any other tool, so a fully enchanted hoe is one of the best tools in the game.

Best trident enchantments

  1. Loyalty III — returns to you when thrown.
  2. Channeling — summons lightning on a hit during a thunderstorm (must be in the open).
  3. Impaling V — +12.5 damage to sea creatures (and all mobs in Bedrock).
  4. Unbreaking III + Mending

Riptide conflicts with Loyalty and Channeling. Build two tridents: one Loyalty/Channeling thrower, one Riptide III mobility trident for rocket-elytra-style flight in the rain.

Best mace enchantments

The mace (1.21+) is the highest-damage weapon in the game when paired with elytra and a long fall. Best loadout: Density V + Breach IV + Mending + Unbreaking III. Wind Burst (rare loot enchantment) bounces you off the ground for combo strikes.

How to actually get these enchantments

Three sources, used together:

  1. Enchanting table with 15 bookshelves for level 30 rolls — best for Efficiency V, Sharpness V, Power V, Protection IV.
  2. Librarian villager trades for specific enchanted books — best for Mending, Unbreaking III, Silk Touch, Fortune III, Looting III.
  3. Loot drops — Mending occasionally drops from fishing, librarian raids drop Hero of the Village discounts on books.

Set up your bookshelf ring using our bookshelf placement guide, then roll a Librarian using our villager trading guide, and you'll have a full enchanted diamond set in a single play session.

Mending is the single biggest quality-of-life enchantment in the game. Every other enchantment makes your gear better — Mending makes your gear last.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best enchantment in Minecraft?+

Mending. It uses experience orbs to repair the item, meaning a piece of gear with Mending + Unbreaking III lasts forever. Every other enchantment is gear-specific; Mending belongs on everything you plan to keep.

What is the best armor enchantment combo?+

Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending on every piece, plus Feather Falling IV on boots and Aqua Affinity + Respiration III on the helmet. Protection IV beats Blast, Projectile and Fire Protection for general survival.

Is Sharpness or Smite better?+

Sharpness V is better for general survival because most fights are against mixed mob types. Smite V deals more damage to undead specifically (zombies, skeletons, the Wither) — keep a dedicated Smite sword for Wither fights and bastion raids, but make Sharpness your daily-driver weapon.

Do Infinity and Mending work together on a bow?+

No. Infinity and Mending have been mutually exclusive on bows since version 1.11. Infinity saves arrows; Mending repairs the bow. Most players keep two bows: one Infinity for early game, one Mending for endgame.

What is the maximum enchantment level I can get from the enchanting table?+

Level 30. To consistently see level 30 enchantments, you need 15 bookshelves placed correctly around the enchanting table — see our bookshelf placement guide. The table itself caps at level 30, but you can stack additional enchantments using an anvil and enchanted books.
