Short answer: you cannot make a saddle in Minecraft. There is no crafting recipe on any edition — Java, Bedrock, PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, or Pocket Edition. Can you craft a saddle in Minecraft?
No. Despite what old YouTube thumbnails and TikTok clips claim, there has never been a saddle crafting recipe in vanilla Minecraft. Mojang has said publicly they keep saddles as loot rewards to give exploration a tangible payoff. Any video showing a leather-and-iron crafting grid is either a mod, a data pack, or clickbait.
If you want a craftable saddle, you can add one through a data pack. Otherwise, you have exactly four legit paths: chest loot, fishing, villager trading, or mob drops (from a saddled ravager or zombified piglin jockey). Each option is broken down below.
Every place saddles spawn (2026 loot tables)
These percentages are pulled from the current 1.21 loot tables. "Per chest" means the chance any single chest of that type contains at least one saddle.
- Dungeon chest — 28.3% per chest. Most common source in early game.
- Nether fortress chest — 35.3% per chest. Often the fastest source once you have a portal.
- End city chest — 28.4% per chest. Not the highest rate, but End cities are dense with chests.

Fastest way to get a saddle in survival
Ranked by expected time-to-saddle for a fresh survival world:
- Villager trading (best long-term). Find or cure a Leatherworker villager, level them to Master with leather, cowhide, and rabbit hide. Their Master trade cycles include a saddle for 6 emeralds. Once unlocked, restock is unlimited — this is effectively an infinite saddle farm.
- Nether fortress raid. Portal in, sprint the bridges, loot every chest you see. Two or three fortresses almost always yield a saddle plus a few horse armor pieces.
- Trial chamber ominous vaults. If you are in 1.21+, spawn an ominous trial with a Bad Omen potion, clear the trial, and use an ominous trial key on a vault. Highest per-attempt drop rate in the game.
- AFK fishing. With a Luck of the Sea III + Lure III rod, expected time is roughly 2–4 hours per saddle. Only worth doing if you are already AFK farming XP.
- Ravager and piglin jockey drops. Rare, but every ravager killed during a raid farm drops its saddle 100% of the time.
How to trade for a saddle with a villager
- Build a lectern-and-workstation setup, or find an existing village with a cauldron (Leatherworker workstation).
- Trap a villager next to the cauldron so they claim the Leatherworker profession.
- Trade repeatedly — leather → emerald, flint → emerald, rabbit hide → emerald — to level them up: Novice → Apprentice → Journeyman → Expert → Master.
- At Master level, the saddle trade unlocks for 6 emeralds. It is a locked trade slot: you will not lose it on restock.
- Break and replace the cauldron if the Master trades don't include a saddle. Locked professions cannot re-roll; only rebreed or cure new villagers if you want to re-roll.
How to put a saddle on a horse, pig, strider, or camel
Horses, donkeys, mules, camels
Tame the animal first by mounting it repeatedly until hearts appear. Then, on Java, right-click while holding the saddle to equip it, or open the animal's inventory (E while mounted) and drag the saddle into the saddle slot. On Bedrock, mount the animal and open your inventory to reveal the saddle slot on the right.
Pigs
Right-click a pig with the saddle to equip it — no taming needed. You cannot steer a saddled pig with WASD alone; you must hold a carrot on a stick. Damaging the carrot on a stick with sprint bursts gives the pig temporary speed boosts.
Striders
Right-click a strider with the saddle in the Nether. Steer with a warped fungus on a stick. Striders take damage on land, so keep them in lava.
