Minecraft lantern recipe
The lantern is a crafting table recipe, not a 2x2 inventory recipe, so you need a crafting table in front of you.
- Smelt raw iron into an iron ingot in a furnace, or pick up an iron ingot from a chest.
- Put the iron ingot in a crafting grid to get 9 iron nuggets.
- Craft a torch from 1 stick and 1 coal or charcoal.
- Place the torch in the centre slot of the 3x3 crafting grid.
- Fill all 8 remaining slots with iron nuggets.
- Drag the lantern out of the result slot. One craft gives one lantern.
Iron nuggets also drop from smelting iron tools and armour in a furnace, and pillagers and vindicators sometimes leave iron behind, so an iron farm makes lanterns effectively free.
How to make a soul lantern
The soul lantern is the blue-flame variant. The recipe is identical except for the centre item.
- Get soul sand or soul soil from the Nether, both common in soul sand valleys.
- Craft a soul torch from 1 stick, 1 coal or charcoal, and 1 soul sand or soul soil.
- Surround the soul torch with 8 iron nuggets in a crafting table.
Soul lanterns emit light level 10 instead of 15, so they leave darker corners where mobs can spawn. Their key advantage is that piglins are afraid of soul fire blocks and soul lanterns, which lets you fence off a Nether outpost without fighting.
Lantern light level and mob spawning
Hostile mobs need block light level 0 to spawn in 1.21. A lantern at light 15 lights a large sphere: the light drops by 1 per block of distance, so a single ceiling lantern keeps roughly a 15-block radius spawn-proof at ground level, less around corners and behind walls.
- Lantern — light level 15, same as a torch, but reaches further visually because it can hang in the middle of a room.
- Soul lantern — light level 10, so plan for gaps roughly every 10 blocks.
- Sea lantern and glowstone — also light 15 and full blocks, better for flush ceilings.
- Placing lanterns every 12 blocks along a mineshaft corridor keeps the whole tunnel dark-proof with room to spare.
How to hang a lantern with chains
Hanging lanterns are the reason most players craft them instead of using torches. A lantern will attach to the underside of any solid block, fence, or chain.
- Craft a chain from 1 iron ingot between 2 iron nuggets, stacked vertically in a crafting table. One craft gives one chain.
- Place the first chain on the underside of a ceiling block.
- Right-click the bottom of that chain with another chain to extend the drop as far as you want.
- Right-click the bottom chain with a lantern to hang it.
Chains also connect horizontally in 1.21 and can be waterlogged, which makes them useful for underwater lighting runs alongside sea lanterns.
Lantern decoration ideas that actually look good
- Street lamps — a fence post with a lantern hung from a trapdoor or fence arm at the top, spaced every 8 blocks along a path.
- Lamp posts on walls — place a chain into the side of a wall block with a lantern under it for a sconce look.
- Staggered heights — hang lanterns on chains of 1, 2, and 3 links across a great hall ceiling so the light reads as a chandelier instead of a grid.
- Campfire pairs — a lantern above a campfire in an inn or tavern build gives layered warm light with rising smoke.
- Underwater strings — waterlogged chains with lanterns light a dock or a canal properly.
- Nether builds — soul lanterns on blackstone read as ghostly blue and keep piglins out at the same time.

Lantern vs torch vs sea lantern
- Torch — cheapest, light 15, but cannot hang below a block on its own and melts nearby snow. Best for caving.
- Lantern — costs 8 iron nuggets, light 15, hangs from ceilings and chains, does not burn out. Best for bases and paths.
- Soul lantern — light 10, repels piglins, cold blue tone. Best for the Nether and spooky builds.
- Sea lantern — light 15, full block, crafted from prismarine shards and crystals. Best for flush floors and ceilings.
- Glowstone — light 15, full block, harvested in the Nether. Best when you need a solid light block you can build into a wall.
Common mistakes when crafting lanterns
- Using iron ingots instead of nuggets. The recipe needs nuggets. Convert 1 ingot into 9 nuggets first.
- Trying to craft in the 2x2 inventory grid. The lantern needs the full 3x3 crafting table.
- Expecting more than one lantern per craft. Each craft returns exactly one.
- Assuming soul lanterns are as bright as normal lanterns. They are light 10, so mobs can spawn in the gaps.
- Placing a lantern directly on a chain that is not anchored. Chains must connect back to a solid block or they break.
